Smoking causes fire in Constance Bay area home

OTTAWA, Ont. – An improperly discarded cigarette is to blame after an early Tuesday morning fire near Constance Bay.
One person was home at the time and was woken by his dog’s barks, both escaped uninjured.
The blaze that broke out at 311 Whistler Rd. shortly before 3 a.m. was quickly brought under control — but not before a firefighter suffered an ankle and wrist injury. He is expected to be ok.
Crews had to pull apart a large section of the ceiling to make sure the fire – that had spread to the home’s attic – was completely out.
Damage is pegged at $100,000.
This is the second fire in the capital in ten days caused by smoking.
Two women in their 50’s were treated for smoke inhalation after a fire in their downtown apartment on July 2.
Police are urging smokers to light up outside.
