Quebec trial postponed due to new evidence

MONTREAL – A mysterious letter was behind the postponement of a mental-health hearing for a former Quebec doctor who killed his two children.
Guy Turcotte was scheduled to appear Friday before a mental health review board. But the hearing was put off until November because the panel wanted more time to look into a letter it received this month.
Details about the nature of the letter and who it came from are not being revealed. Quebecers have been closely watching the case since Turcotte was found not criminally responsible by a jury.
During his murder trial, Turcotte admitted to causing his children’s deaths but he denied intending to do it. The children were stabbed repeatedly as they lay in their beds. Turcotte will remain detained at a hospital until the rescheduled hearing in November.
The panel will eventually decide whether Turcotte should be released or remain detained in a psychiatric institution.
