Ottawa-based technology patent house Wi-LAN makes bid for Mosaid

OTTAWA – Technology patent house Wi-LAN Inc. (TSX:WIN) says it will make a $480-million cash takeover bid for Mosaid Technologies Inc. (TSX:MSD).
Wi-LAN says it wants to buy the competing patent company to better compete in more global technology markets.
The company says it will pay $38 in cash for all of the outstanding common shares of Mosaid, a premium of about 31 per cent over the closing price of Mosaid shares.
Wi-LAN says combining the two companies, both located in Ottawa, will make it easier to grow in the global patent licensing business.
Wi-LAN primarily collects licensing fees from companies that use technologies covered by its portfolio of patents.
Mosaid develops semiconductor memory technology and licenses patented intellectual property in the areas of semiconductors and telecommunications systems.
