Pedestrian killed in Burnaby

BURNABY (NEWS1130) – A man in his 20s is dead after being hit by a car on Lougheed Highway near Phillips Avenue in Burnaby. Shortly after 4:30 a.m. a man called RCMP to tell them he believed he hit someone with his car.
The road was closed for several and there’s no word if the driver will be charged, but police say he is co-operating with investigators.
It’s unclear alcohol or the heavy rain played a factor, but again there are calls for drivers and pedestrians to be street smart as we head into fall.
Trace Acres with BCAA says if you’re out when it’s dark, try to wear bright clothing. “And never cross a road when you’re trying to multi-task, text, send a message, make a phone call or even have your headphones on.”
He adds there is another common misconception for people to be aware of. “A pedestrian should not assume that just because they step off the curb into a crosswalk or out in the middle of the road that drivers are going to stop. They might not see you if you’re not wearing appropriate clothing.”
