Deadly weekend on area highways

It’s been a tragic long weekend on Ontario highways, with several fatal crashes.
Despite the OPP’s Operation Impact, at least seven people have died on Ontario roads and highways over the holiday weekend.
There were several crashes in the Toronto area – including one, where a 25-year-old man died in an early morning street race.
In Cornwall, a teen was killed Friday after crashing his car into the Seaway International Bridge, which connects the city to New York State.
At least six people have died on Quebec roads in the past three days, including two men in Chelsea.
The teens, 17 and 18 years old, were killed when their car collided with a van Friday night. Police said speed may have been a factor.
It seems drivers are not getting the message to put down their phones, pay attention to the road and not speed while behind the wheel.
As part of the their long-weekend crackdown, police across the province were targeting distracted and other driving offences.
During the operation they laid 3,655 charges for speeding, 48 for racing, 622 for not wearing a seatbelt and 178 for distracted driving.
Police say the final numbers will be released Tuesday.
Operation Impact also coincides with the launch of the OPP fall seatbelt campaign.
