Vancouver releases Grey Cup party plan

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – We now know what the party plans are for the Grey Cup in Vancouver next month. The plans don’t include Hank Williams Junior.
The theme this year is raise the roof – playing off the new roof they have at BC Place. The party kicks off with the CFL player awards and after party on the Thursday, the Vanier Cup will be played on Friday, then there’s the Grey Cup Parade with 40 floats that will happen on Saturday.
Of course, the main event, the game itself, will be played on Sunday, November 27th. And over the course of those four days there’s lots of partying to be done at the 90-thousand square foot Molson Canadian House and the family zone at the Jack Poole Plaza.
Security is a concern for many following the Stanley Cup riot in June. A big issue at the riot was booze, and Scott Ackles, the man in charge of Grey Cup party planning, says they’re only going to sell it in one place.
“We don’t have any liquor sales out on the street. We haven’t requested any liquor licenses anywhere expect the Convention Centre.”
City councillor Andrea Reimer says they’ve had a lot of time to plan for this… but after the riot, all of those plans are being revisited.
“It means we go back through all the plans and look at if the security is adequate knowing what we know now about what might happen. Is the traffic plan adequate? Are we planning for contingency if there’s more people than we expect?”
Premier Christy Clark says the Grey Cup party in downtown Vancouver next month will be family friendly.
She’s not expecting a repeat of the Stanley Cup riot. “This will be a lot more like what we saw during the Olympics. The crowds will be dispersed, it’s highly organized, it’s over a couple of days. You know, I do think this will be a family fun event.”
The game is November 27th.
