With the memory of Steve Jobs looming, the iPhone 4S went on sale at 8 a.m. Friday.
It is the first model of the groundbreaking smartphone to hit the market without the iconic co-founder at Apple’s helm.
Hundreds are lining city blocks across the globe. Sydney, Australia and Tokyo will be be the first to get their hands on the new iPhone.
Over 100 people formed long line-ups outside the Apple store at the Rideau Centre. Brian Measures was the first person waiting in line since 8 p.m. Thursday.
” I wasn’t sure how high the demand was going to be, nobody really knows, they can’t tell you how many phones they have in stock so I wanted to play it on the safe side and get here early,” said Measures.
One of those spending the night outside an Apple store in Los Gatos, California is the company’s co-founder Steve Wozniak.
The iPhone 4S has a faster processor and better camera than the iPhone 4. It also comes with Siri, a voice controlled ‘personal assistant’ that can set appointments, send messages and answer questions.
” You talk to a phone like you’re talking to a person, you get an answer and not some direction that might lead you to where you can get the answer, you get the answer,” said Wozniak.
Apple said first-day preorders for the iPhone 4S, which began a week ago, topped one million beating the company’s own expectation and sales for earlier models.
Some of the new features are available to iPhone 3 and 4 users via the the new operating system that is available for download.
The iPhone 4S, which comes in black or white, sells in an unlocked version from Apple starting at $649 for the 16 GB model, $749 for 32 GB and $849 for 64 GB.
