Occupy Ottawa group camps out for second night

OTTAWA – After a weekend of marching along Sussex Drive and pitching tents in Confederation Park, demonstraters of the “Occupy Ottawa” protest say they’re in for the long haul after several spent a second night in the park.
Demonstrators have been caught up in protests across Canada and the globe that were born from the Occupy Wall Street movement, which decries corporate greed and the widening gap between the haves and the have-nots.
However, here in Ottawa, many locals have their own reasons for protesting.
One man said he’s there because he’s unemployed with a Bachelor of Arts and doesn’t know which way his life is going on.
About two dozen tents remained set up at Conferderation Park early Monday.
A general assembly is planned for 8 p.m. in the evening.
Meantime, Occupy Canada protesters in other Canadian cities also planned to carry on the demonstrations they started over the weekend.
On Sunday, the Occupy Ottawa movement hit the streets for a march.
Over 300 people marched through the downtown core, waving signs and banners. Many cheered and waved to onlookers as they passed by.
“We are the 99 per cent,” the group chanted as they walked up Elgin Street.
