This article is more than 5 years old.
It looked like a sight one could find at a deli counter, but super-sized.
Two large packages of shrink-wrapped meat lay on the sidewalk in front of Hy’s Steakhouse on Queen’s street Tuesday.
But look a little more closely and one would find bloodied PETA protesters wrapped in the packaging.
“This is a striking image to remind people that whether it’s a human, a pig, a cow or a chicken, flesh is flesh, and before these animals end up wrapped in cellophane, chickens and turkeys have their throats slit while they’re stil fully conscious, pigs have thei teeth, tails ans testicles removed without any painkillers and cows are routinely skinned alive at the slaughterhouse,” said Emily Lavender, a spokesperson with PETA.
Lavender told 1310News meat is murder.
“We’re just making the connection that people find it appalling to eat a human, but all animals have the same parts, the same capacity to feel pain and suffering, just like we do,” she said.
“Animals have personalities, they form friendships and families when given the chance,” she added. “Pigs and chickens are more intelligent than cats and dogs, but are abused in ways that would be illegal if cats and dogs were the victim.”
A crowd gathered around the protestors, gaping at the women in the packaging and Lavender said hopefully they will be convinced to skip meat entirely and go vegan.
