Almost a dozen veterans under the same roof

Members of the Russell community gathered for an early ceremony yesterday, at the Russell Meadows Retirement Community.
The town’s mayor, young cadets, and legion members took part in the ceremony, but it was all in honour of 11 veterans.
Michael Phillips joined the army in 1941, he was going on 18 at the time, but even now at 87, ceremonies like this one mean a lot.
“Well it’s kind of sad in a way, because it brings back a lot of memories. I lost a lot of good friends,” he says.
Charles Hunter was also at the ceremony, he joined the army with his brother in 1939. The 91 year-old says while the ceremony was very nice, it brings back memories.
“I think of three people, always, my two good buddies and my brother,” he says.
The retirement centre has a ceremony every year, but this one was the largest. The activity manager says she made sure of that when she found out how many veterans live there.
