Ottawa Mission serves up Christmas dinner

OTTAWA – Over 100 volunteers donned aprons and hair nets to serve dinner at the Ottawa Mission’s annual dinner on Sunday afternoon.
People lined up in the Mission’s lobby and down the block to get into the dinner, but everyone was given a plate.
The meal included all the traditional fare such as turkey, gravy and potatoes.
Ottawa Mission director Diane Morrison said they expect to serve 2600 meals at this year’s feast.
“We have a lot of donated turkeys that came in,” said Morrison. “And we’ve got 3000 cupcakes that people made from various places!”
Morrison said she is happy to see the dining room packed with people.
“It always makes you feel good. I think the servers feel almost better than sometimes the people sitting down because it makes you feel good to give back.”
For many people like Rollande the dinner was a chance to get out of the house and celebrate with friends.
“I felt great getting here and I feel great leaving here,” said Rollande.”I love these people and I love the service.”
Everyone who served at the dinner was a volunteer.
Familiar faces like Councillor Mathieu Fleury and the United Way’s ambassador Max Keeping were at the dinner helping out, serving soup and juice.
The Ottawa Mission said it expects to serve 2,500 lbs of roasted turkey, over 200 dinner rolls and 3000 cupcakes at the feast.
