Waiting game continues for canal skateway opening

The recent cold snap means the ice on the Rideau Canal is getting thicker by the day and workers have been able to do some heavy-duty flooding south of the NAC.
That doesn’t mean the ice is safe for skaters.
NCC spokesperson Jasmine Leduc tells 1310News workers began flooding the ice for the 42nd year of skating two weeks ago, but the ice just isn’t safe yet.
There is no estimate for when you will be able to lace up your skates.
“We’re still on target because it usually opens in the first half of January weather permitting,” she said. “Some areas, the ice could be thicker where we have been able to do some intense flooding. In other areas it still could be very very thin.”
They haven’t yet measured the ice for thickness.
The earliest opening was December 18, 1981, the latest opening was February 2, 2002.
