Students learn importance of nutrients

OTTAWA, On. — Grade five students at Manor Park Public School learned about the importance of iodine Thursday.

The Micronutrient Initiative held a workshop at the school as part of International Development Week, and taught the students how to test for iodine in salt.

“I learned that some salt has iodine and some doesn’t, and it’s healthier for you if it has iodine,” said Maddie. “We learned that if you add a special liquid to one type of salt, it turns purple and that’s how you see it has iodine in it.”

The average person needs around one teaspoon of iodine in their entire lives. Iodine helps brains and bodies develop.

“No matter where they live, whether here in Ottawa, in Ahmedabad, India or Dakar, Senegal, children need good nutrition from the start of life to help them develop and learn in school,” Venkatesh Mannar, the president of Micronutrient Initiative said in a release.”

The Micronutrient Initiative, which is Ottawa-based, helps 500 million women and children around the world get the vitamins and minerals they need to survive.
