Distracted drivers targeted

Ontario Provincial Police are blitzing provincial highways for distracted drivers. Eight people have been killed on Ontario highways so far in 2012 due to distracted driving. Ottawa O.P.P Constable Rheal Levac tells 1310News “some drivers are starting to get it. I do see vehicles pulled over to the side of the road when I’m on patrol and on my private time driving down the highways”. Distracted driving involves more than just hand held devices. “Anything that can distract you, whether you’re eating in the car, you’re smoking, you have pets jumping around, you’re playing with the radio” is considered distracted driving according to Levac. Fines for using a handheld device will cost you $155. Fines for otyher forms of distracted driving can range from $400 to $ 2000. Levac says police will accept no excuses and there will be no exceptions.
