VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Maple Leafs are making a rare visit to Vancouver Saturday afternoon. It’s a city that hasn’t been kind to the Leafs for nearly a decade.Toronto hasn’t won here since 2003.
“It’s always a fun opportunity for me to play against the Leafs,” said Canucks forward Alex Burrows.
“I scored my first NHL goal against the Leafs at the old GM Place and whenever we play at the Air Canada Centre there’s always a good buzz. As a kid when I was cheering for Montreal, the Leafs weren’t my favourite team. That’s how I grew up, so it’s fun to play against them.”
Burrows isn’t the only Canuck who grew up with a severe dislike for the blue and white. Even defenseman Chris Tanev hated the Leafs when he was a kid… and he grew up in Toronto.
“I’m not a Leaf fan,” said Tanev.
“I wasn’t growing up and I’m not now. My grandfather was a Red Wings fan so I kind of followed his suit and definitely not now.”
Toronto had dropped four games in a row before they downed the Oilers 4-3 in overtime on Wednesday. Vancouver is coming off of a 3-1 win over Colorado.
