Three dead in VIA train derailment in Burlington

Three people have died after a VIA Rail train derailed in Burlington.

VIA Rail has confirmed that the three killed were VIA employees.  Two of the dead were locomotive engineers and the third was a trainee.

It happened around 3:30 p.m., Sunday, in the King Road and Highway 403 area.

75 people were onboard the train, which was heading to Toronto from Niagara Falls.

VIA spokesperson Michelle Lamarche said one employee was killed in the derailment and the status of two other employees on the train are currently unknown.

Lamarche said three passengers were airlifted to hospital.

CityNews is reporting that ten people were transported to a Mississauga hospital with minor injuries.

The rest of the passengers were transported to Union Station.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has deployed a team of investigators to the derailment.

The train came off the tracks at Plains Road and King Road near Aldershot station this afternoon.

Police told 1310News the derailment has caused a fuel leak but homes in the area are not being evacuated.
