Two Highway 5 expansion protesters in hospital

Emotions are running high outside of Wakefield,  where protesters have been rallying against the expansion of Highway 5 through Gatineau Park.

Two protestors who scaled the 300 year old trees slated for clear-cutting remain in hospital. They spent the night in the trees and came down overnight Wednesday to be treated for possible hypothermia.

Anne Winship is one of the organizers. She tells 1310News the crews have taken down the ancient forest.

“It’s just typical. It’s not just about the trees. It’s the fact that they were symbols of this whole eco system.”

Winship adds that eight of the demonstrators were arrested and charged,  and her organization will be supporting them in court.
