The crown finished its case against a former RCMP officer accused of first degree murder in the 2009 stabbing death of Const. Eric Czapnik.
Laywers Brian Holowka and Meaghan Cunningham called dozens of witnesses since the trial began with jury selection on Feb. 27.
The trial is expected to last four weeks and the defense will begin presenting its case Thursday morning.
Testimony in the case has been complete and at times emotional, particularly when photos of Czapnik’s autopsy were shown in court.
The four paramedics who tried to save Czapnik testified along with first responders to calls for “officer needs help.”
The crown also called to the stand the officers assigned to guard Kevin Gregson after he was arrested at the scene of the stabbing, as well as the lead investigator on the case.
Sgt. Tim Hodgins helped explain more than three hours of Gregson’s police interrogation video and 11 minutes of security footage from the hospital the morning of the stabbing.
That footage shows the events as they have been presented including a bleeding Czapnik running into the ER clutching his neck.
Along with first degree murder there is a charge of robbery and two carjacking victims took the stand as well.
The crown presented crime scene photos and physical evidence along with the testimony, all part of the crown’s attempt to prove that Gregson murdered Czapnik.
The crown rested after calling a neurologist to the stand who explained he saw no need to refer Gregson to a psychologist.
The defense has asked for the afternoon to prepare before beginning presenting evidence Thursday morning.
