Court to hear closing arguments in G20 bomb plot trial Friday

TORONTO – Closing arguments continue in Toronto today in the trial of a man suspected  of plotting to bomb the city’s riotous G-20 summit in June, 2010.

The Crown claims Byron Sonne, a 39-year old self-described security geek, was obsessed with explosives, was sympathetic to anarchists and wanted to “stick it to the system.”

Sonne, who’s charged with possessing explosives and counselling to commit mischief, claims legal chemicals found at his upscale Toronto home were for his model-rocket hobby and making crystals.

But prosecutor Liz Nadeau says the hobby was only a ruse meant to hide his bomb making plans.

She also reminded the court of evidence that Sonne had engaged in numerous Internet chats about summit security measures, including sharing plans to listen to police scanners.

The defence will make its closing submissions today after the Crown wraps up.

It has argued that while Sonne may have had some strange interests, he had no criminal intent.
