Surviving the gas prices; tips for reducing fuel consumption

With gas prices seemingly endlessly on the rise, cutting back on your fuel consumption can be a major money-saver.

So while we can’t control the cost of gas, the Canadian Automobile Association says we can try to cut back on our usage.

A few small changes can help reduce fuel consumption, according to Silvana Aceto from the CAA, who says a visit to the mechanic can work wonders.

“If you keep your car running properly, that will help maximize your fuel economy, make sure your tires are properly inflated, and you can do this by checking your tire pressure once every month,” Aceto said.

As well, a heavier car uses more gas, so remember to clean out the trunk and remove things you are not using like a snow shovel or roof rack.

Your driving style can actually make an impact as well, and Aceto says simple changes can help in the long run.

Avoiding jack-rabbit starts and being gentle on the brakes are two suggestions for improving fuel economy through changing your driving habits.

Research also shows most cars use about 20 per cent less fuel when they are driven at 90 km/h instead of 110 km/h.

So if a more fuel-efficient vehicle isn’t in your plans, at least you can try and improve the fuel efficiency of your current set of wheels.
