20 to 40 mm rain forecasted across Ottawa Saturday

Heavy rain is expected Saturday afternoon and overnight, which could cause flooding into Sunday.

Environment Canada has upgraded the special weather statement for the Ottawa area to a rainfall warning.

The weather agency says rainfall amounts of 20 to 40 mm can be expected, but notes that the ground may have little ability to absorb more moisture due to previous weather events.

The rain is being brought by a Colorado low, sweeping across much of southern Ontario. The heaviest rain can be expected throughout the evening and overnight. Thunderstorms may also occur.

“Water will likely pool on roads and in low-lying areas,” Environment Canada says. “Visibility will likely be suddenly reduced at times.”

The flood outlook that was issued for the upper watershed last week remains in place, according to the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority.

Flood outlook statements also remain in place for the Carp River and Mississippi River, under the jurisdiction of the Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority.

The City of Ottawa says residents living along the Ottawa River and its tributaries can expect water levels and flows to increase this weekend.
