Executives are not immune to public service cuts

The federal government is extending cuts to public service executives.

As many as 600 public managers could lose their jobs as the federal government attempts to trim $5.2 billion from public service budgets.

However, these cuts are overshadowed by the 19, 200 cuts expected for public servants over the next three years.

Not all of the managing positions are being eliminated as a result of these department cuts.

Over the last 12 years, the number of executives has ballooned and Treasury Board President Tony Clement tells the Citizen, the jobs were “unnecessary”.

The pace of growth among the executive ranks grew by 70 per cent since the Liberal downsizing in the 1990s, which is twice the growth of the rest of the public service.
