Fire forces student evacuation at West Carleton High School

OTTAWA – Students had to be evacuated from West Carleton High School Wednesday morning after a small electrical fire. Students were evacuated for about an hour.

Ottawa fire crews were called to the school shortly before 10 a.m., after flames broke out in an air handling unit in a mechanical room.

Firefighters were able to put the fire out with extinguishers within minutes, and the only damage was to the unit itself.

Crews ventilated the gym and a section of the second floor, and students were allowed to return to class before 11 a.m.
