OTTAWA – Minister of International Cooperation Bev Oda is stepping down at the end of the month after eight years as a Member of Parliament.
Oda has not giving a reason for her departure but the MP has been under a lot of criticism over the last year.
The minister has been the subject of several controversies, such as the scribbled word “not” on a document to deny funding to an aid organization. More recently, she has been under fire for her expensive limo rides and spending tax dollars on a $16 glass of orange juice.
Despite these issues Prime Minister Stephen Harper has praised her hard work and dedication.
Public Safety Minister Vic Toews said Oda did a lot to get grain to people in poor nations.
“There were some very significant agreements that she entered into with the Canada Food Grains Bank, which is an amalgamation of a number of non-profit organizations,” said Toews.
Oda handed in her resignation to Harper two weeks ago.
In a statement on her website she said it has been an honour to serve her constituents in the riding of Durham. Her resignation comes into effect on July 31.
There has been a lot of speculation that a cabinet shuffle will take place before the Fall session begins in September.
