Crews battle Riverside brush fire

OTTAWA, On. — Fire crews were called to yet another grass fire Tuesday afternoon.

This one along Riverside Drive near Hurdman station that stretched across two-acres of a grassy hill.

Crews were on scene and had the fire under control within an hour.

Deputy Fire Chief Dennis Dale says the drought-like conditions continue to cause a problem in the city.

“It is very, very dry, people need to be very, very careful about what they’re doing with fire right now until we get some rain,” said Dale. “Even with the rain that we’ve had today, (Tuesday) the ground is so hard, it’s not soaking in, it’s just running off and it takes nothing to get this going.”

Dale says they don’t know what caused this, but could be anything.

“People have to be aware of their cigarettes, discarding cigarettes, matches.” Dale said. “It could be kids playing with magnifying glasses, when you’re a kid, kids do that and then it’s gone. Could be anything, campfires, bonfires anything.”

Crews knew this was the site of a former landfill and Dale says they didn’t feel the need to take that into account when battling the blaze.
