Wynne delivers her first throne speech

TORONTO – Facing a $12-billion provincial deficit and an ongoing dispute with public school teachers, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne reached out to the Opposition in her first throne speech on Tuesday.

The plan laid out in the speech included:

  • restraining program spending to reduce Ontario debt-to-GDP ratio while eliminating $12B deficit by 2017-18
  • joining forces with high school educators, universities and employers to establish opportunities for young people

The Liberals said they want to work with the opposition parties, the private sector and non-profits to find ways to improve the economy, create jobs and slay the deficit.

Lt-Gov. David Onley delivered the speech, which began with a tribute to Lincoln Alexander, Canada’s first black MP and former Ontario lieutenant governor, who passed away in October.

The House will return 9 a.m. Wednesday to consider the throne speech.
