Ottawa hit by another winter storm

OTTAWA, Ont. – Another blast of winter weather causing trouble on the roads Wednesday.
Ottawa and most of eastern Ontario remain under a special weather statement from Environment Canada.
Snow is expected to last through Wednesday into Thursday, dumping 15-20 centimetres Wednesday and another 5-10 Thursday.
Depending on the temperature, some areas could receive as much as 20-30 centimetres of snow by the time it’s all said and done Thursday.
“It’ll be that wet heavy, heart attack snow,” says 1310News Meteorologist, Richard Zurawski. “The winds will pick up to 50 km/hr and it’s going to be greasy. Overnight, we’re looking at a chance of getting freezing rain, and even some rain mixed in – everything but the kitchen sink in this forecast.”
As of 6 p.m. Ottawa Airport was reporting 12 c.m. of snow had fallen, which would be a new record for February 27.
No rest for city crews, who are ready for more clearing and salting.
“We will have all our main sidewalks, main roads – that’s what we’ll be focusing on.” says Manager of Roads and Traffic Operations, Kevin Wylie.
Due to the weather, Ottawa’s overnight parking ban has been put into effect, which means there is no parking on city streets overnight tonight between 1 a.m. and 7 a.m. Vehicles left on the street could be ticketed or fined.
If you are traveling or expecting to pick someone up at the airport, some flights are still on schedule but there are some cancellations and delays at the Ottawa Airport.
‘STORMCENTRE’ Details as of 6 p.m.;
- 12 centimetres had already fallen at the Airport, according to Environment Canada.
- Ottawa Police had responded to 91 collisions since 9a.m. In a typical 24-hour period they respond to 50.
- Gatineau Police had responded to 15 traffic calls since 11 a.m.
- Taxi wait times average 30 minutes
- CAA wait times average 2 hours in the city and 4-5 hours at home
