Suspicious package at DND posed no danger to public; police

OTTAWA, Ont. – The RCMP aren’t releasing many details surrounding the suspicious package delivered to the Department of National Defence Headquarters on Tuesday afternoon, but will say that the package was deemed dangerous enough to need the Ottawa Police Explosive Disposal Unit.
Ottawa Police said the package did not contain explosive material but had some components that are consistent with what would be in an improvised explosive device.
“Doesn’t mean it was an explosive device,” said Ottawa Police Inspector, Mike Maloney. “It just means the three components necessary for an explosive device to be present, were there.”
The Explosive Disposal Unit had to render the package safe by disrupting it twice, meaning two controlled explosions.
RCMP Sergeant Richard Rollings said the investigation is ongoing, but he confirmed that a suspicious package was received at the DND at 3:15 p.m.
Both the Ottawa Police and the RCMP said there was never any threats to the public during the incident.
