OTTAWA – The friends and family of a woman murdered by her husband are getting their say.
Victim impact statements are being read to the judge at Mark Hutt’s sentencing hearing. Hutt was found guilty of first-degree murder in the brutal death of his wife Donna Jones in 2009.
Friends and family describe a bubbly, friendly woman whose life changed dramatically once she started a relationship with Hutt.
Donna’s friend Mike broke into sobs, saying he feels “completely broken inside.”
Donna’s body was found broken, bruised and covered in burns in the basement of the home she shared with Hutt; just weeks shy of her 34th birthday.
She died from septic shock from burns she received when she was being drenched with a pot full of boiling water; something Hutt maintains was an accident.
Donna went without medical treatment for 11 days before she died.
Forensic evidence showed she had several broken bones, and 29 air gun pellets embedded in her flesh; at least two of those shot into her feet just days before she died.
A vigil to remember Donna and other domestic violence victims is planned for Tuesday in Minto Park at 7:30 p.m.
