Canadian soldier facing first degree murder charges

OTTAWA – A Canadian soldier who served on six tours-of-duty is facing first degree murder charges for the murder of his wife, Melissa Richmond.
Howard Richmond, 50, was arrested Friday and made his first court appearance at the Elgin Street courthouse Saturday morning.
He will be back in court, via video, on Tuesday afternoon.
Richmond is said to have suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and was part of an online help group for the illness.
The soldier was also reportedly having financial problems.
He is reported to have around $140,000 of debt in a lawsuit by Scotiabank.
Melissa Richmond, 28, was reported missing on Wednesday July 24.
Her car was discovered in the parking lot of the South Keys Shopping Centre that Friday and her body was discovered in a nearby ravine, only partially clothed with multiple stab wounds, on Sunday July 28.
As her husband sat in a jail cell, friends and family of Melissa Richmond grieved together at her wake in Pembroke.
Melissa’s funeral was held on Saturday in Petawawa.
A candlelight vigil will be held for her Sunday at 11:30 p.m. at the Winchester Recreation Centre.
