Marathon prostitution hearings continue

OTTAWA – The Commons justice committee will resume a hearing today on the Harper government’s proposed prostitution bill.
Manitoba’s attorney general Andrew Swan said yesterday that his government supports Bill C-36, but he wants one section amended.
He says it would make it more likely to survive a Supreme Court challenge.
Swan has serious concerns about one section that still makes both prostitutes and clients guilty if they communicate to purchase sex in a public place, or in a place where people under 18 are present.
Last year the high court ruled the old prostitution laws were unconstitutional and gave the government a year to come up with new ones.
