Strandherd-Armstrong bridge set for first commute Monday

OTTAWA – The Strandherd-Armstrong Bridge is open for its first commute Monday morning after about two years of delays.

The bridge connects Barrhaven and Riverside South, and fully opened Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. with an official ceremony involving Mayor Jim Watson and Deputy Mayor Steve Desroches.

Mayor Watson told the crowd the bridge also makes a new landmark for the city of Ottawa.

“It looks like our version of the Eiffel Tower right here in Riverside-South,” Watson said.

The $48 million project was held back with numerous development problems, but Deputy Mayor Steve Desroches told 1310News the community has always supported the completion of the project.

“We’ve always been committed to getting the job done,” said Desroches. “Residents have been very patient, and they’re excited. This is going to open up transportation and transit options, whether they shop, attend recreational facilities or visit relatives.”

The bridge will have eight lanes of traffic, including one for public transit, two bike paths, and a sidewalk on each side.
