Highway 174 fully re-opens

OTTAWA — Highway 174 has re-opened in both directions, east of Trim Road, after the cleanup from a crash and rollover involving a tractor-trailer.
The highway was closed between Trim Road and Cameron Street for nearly 24 hours, for a lengthy and complicated cleanup operation.
Excavators were brought in to the scene to remove soil that had been contaminated by the leaked fuel.
“They’ll just basically remove as much of the soil that they can see is visibly contaminated,” Marc Messier, Ottawa Fire public information officer said on Thursday afternoon. “They’ll be doing soil samples to make sure they get it all.”
More workers fanned out on the Ottawa River, skimming the surface of the water to remove the diesel fuel. Absorbent booms were also used along the edge of the water to gather any fuel that made it to shore.
Messier pointed out that the area of the river affected by fuel runoff was in a bay, and had a weaker current than other parts of the river, which worked in crews’ favour.
The truck was transporting a non-dangerous sand product. It was cleaned up from the crash site by mid-afternoon on Thursday.
