Ottawa Police Arson Unit probing two weekend fires

OTTAWA – The Ottawa Police Arson Unit is investigating two weekend fires.
Fire crews were called to a two-storey, three bedroom duplex at 804 Forest St. near Carling Avenue and Richmond Road around 9:26 p.m. Monday, after reports of a basement fire.
The house was vacant for two days since the tenants had moved out and only a box spring and garbage were left in the basement, but the fire caused more than $100,000 damage to the building.
There was minor smoke damage to the attached unit at 806 Forest St., and Salvation Army and the Red Cross are assisting the two adults who were displaced.
The cause of the fire is unknown and is being treated as suspicious.
The Arson Unit has also taken over the investigation of a house fire that caused $450,000 damage in Stittsville Monday morning.
Ottawa Fire received multiple 911 calls reporting heavy smoke coming from the home at 171 Lloydalex Cres., near Carp Road in Stittsville around 10:40 a.m.
When fire crews arrived the blaze had spread from the back of the kitchen into the attic but was quickly brought under control.
No one was home at the time of the fire, which has been deemed suspicious.
