Man drowns in the Ottawa River after trying to save child

OTTAWA — The Ottawa Police Service Marine and Dive Unit recovered the body of man from the Ottawa River Sunday morning.
The man, identified by his family as Michael Humalang, 39, drowned after jumping into the waters to try and save a 12 year-old child from drowning.
Shortly before 7 p.m., emergency crews and Paramedics were called to Bate Island near the Champlain Bridge for a report a missing person in the water.
Paramedics say a 12-year-old boy was pulled out of the river by a 24-year-old man and brought to shore safely.
The 12 year-old was treated for mild hypothermia, however, Michael Lumahang did not make it out of the water.
Crews searched late through Saturday night before it became too dark, then resumed the search early Sunday morning.
