Ottawa mayoral candidates debate at Carleton University

OTTAWA — A mayoral debate was held at Carleton University Tuesday evening.
Only three out of a possible eight candidates were there: Jim Watson, Mike Maguire and Anwar Syed. It was the second mayoral debate thus far in the campaign, with only Mike Maguire showing up at the first.
Public transportation, mainly for students, was the first topic discussed. Watson said the O-Train will run every four minutes, and will connect to the new LRT line, allowing students to get to campus faster.
Mike Maguire disagreed, saying the LRT would not help anyone get anywhere faster.
The economy was also a hot topic, with Watson discussing his “bid more, win more” strategy to bring more events to Ottawa, creating more jobs. He hopes the city will host the Juno Awards, Grey Cup and the NHL Winter Classic.
Plans for Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017 were also discussed. Maguire was quick to say that he wasn’t going to worry about planning 2017 until the basics are taken care of.
Lowering taxes, hydro bills, rent costs and plans for a new central library were also among debate topics.
Mayoral candidates will debate again Wednesday at the Ottawa Convention Centre.
