Harper calls ISIL a real threat to Canada

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Stephen Harper says Canada cannot stand on the sidelines in the face of the terrorist threat from the Islamic State group.

He’s told reporters in Ottawa that ISIL is a real threat not only to the world, but also to Canada.

Harper says Canada decided to act rapidly to the crisis in the Middle East because it is a necessary mission.

And he denies a report that suggested Canada asked the U-S if it could do more to fight ISIL.

Harper maintains it’s the U-S asking Canada for more help — and the U-S Ambassador to Canada supports that version.
