Royal Ottawa announces $2 million for research chair into suicide prevention

OTTAWA – The Royal has announced a research chair dedicated to suicide prevention.

Do It For Daron and the Mach-Gaensslen Foundation are contributing $2 million to support the creation of the new DIFD Mach-Gaensslen Chair in Suicide Prevention Research.

The new Chair will be dedicated specifically to building knowledge in suicide prevention; exploring and creating the best practices to reduce the number of suicide attempts and completed suicides in Canada.

The chair will also work with health care providers, community organizations, and families.

“Seeing the chair in Suicide Prevention Research come to fruition at The Royal brings us great hope – hope that other families can avoid the horrific despair of losing someone to suicide,” said Luke and Stephanie Richardson on behalf of DIFD.

The Royal is now embarking on a process to recruit a clinician-scientist to fill the role.

The donation is a major contribution to The Royal’s $25 million Capital Campaign for Mental Health.
