Family of mother, daughter involved in Brockville murder-suicide speaks out

BROCKVILLE, Ont. – The family of a Brockville woman and daughter involved in a murder-suicide last week have released their first public statement about the tragedy.

The Brockville Recorder reports the family of Monica Willemsen called the 36-year-old a “devoted mother,” and said her 5-year-old daughter Katrina was a “sweet little girl.”

Police discovered their bodies in their north end apartment Thursday night after school officials reported Katrina’s absence from school.

The aunt of Katrina’s father said in a statement that it’s a challenging time for both families and they appreciate the support, prayers, and love from the community.

Meantime, a crisis team will back at Vanier Public School Monday,  to help Katrina’s classmates cope with her tragic death.

She would have been 6-years-old on Saturday. Funeral arrangements have not been finalized.
