Hundreds gather for vigil to remember Abdirahman Abdi

OTTAWA – Around 500 people gathered for a vigil at Somerset Square Park, Tuesday night, to express support for the family of Abdirahman Abdi.
Abdi, 37, died on Monday afternoon after suffering unknown injuries during a confrontation with Ottawa Police, Sunday morning, in Hintonburg.
Abdi’s step-brother Khalif Ismail thanked supporters for showing up to the vigil.
“He was a wonderful guy,” said Ismail. “Once the funeral is over, the truth is going to come out about who he was.”
Ismail said the family is having a tough time, and many relatives are planning to travel from far away to attend Abdirahman’s funeral – which is scheduled for Friday at the Ottawa Mosque near Scott Street.

Kitchissippi Ward Councillor Jeff Leiper told the crowd to come together, and talk to each other.
Ontario’s Special Investigation Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding Abdi’s death.
