12 people injured in two separate highway crashes

OTTAWA – Provincial police are investigating two crashes on Highway 417 that injured a total of 12 people late Sunday.

Emergency crews were first called to the eastbound Queensway, east of Greenbank, around 10:15 p.m., for a three-vehicle collision in an area adjacent to a construction zone.

A minor collision had occurred between a Chevrolet sedan and a GMC pickup truck, and both vehicles had pulled off to the right shoulder of the highway.

A third motorist in another Chevrolet sedan struck the rear of the two stopped vehicles, scattering debris across the highway.

Four people in the sedan were injured:

-A 21-year-old man was trapped for 31 minutes and had to be extricated using the Jaws of Life before being rushed to the trauma centre.
-A 24-year-old man was immobilized by paramedics.
-A 23-year-old woman was assessed by paramedics for minor injuries.
-A 25-year-old woman was assessed by paramedics for minor injuries.

The 45-year-old driver of the GMC pickup truck was outside the vehicle when he was struck and thrown over a concrete barrier. He was treated for what were suspected to be life-threatening injuries, but escaped major trauma and was treated for an injury to his lower body.

The 20-year-old driver of a the third vehicle, another Chevrolet Sedan, was immobilized by paramedics and treated for head and chest injuries on route to the trauma centre.

Then, just after 11:30 p.m., emergency crews were called to the eastbound lanes of Highway 417, just east of the Pinecrest on-ramp.

The crash happened in a construction zone where workers had laid roadway markers to reduce lanes.

According to a paramedic release, a Hyundai Accent had come to a complete stop on the highway for an unknown reason and appeared to be rear-ended at a high speed by a Toyota Corolla, destroying both vehicles.

A third vehicle, a small Chevrolet, received minor damage in a secondary collision.

Six people were treated for injuries as a result of the crash.

A 23-year-old man was initially trapped in the Hyundai Accent, was extricated and taken to hospital in stable condition.

Four people in the Toyota were injured:

-A 22-year-old woman was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
-A 20-year-old woman was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
-A 30-year-old woman was assessed by paramedics on scene for minor injuries.
-A 30 year-old man was assessed by paramedics on scene for minor injuries.

A 39-year-old man in the Chevrolet was assessed by paramedics for minor injuries.
