No injuries in Barrhaven basement fire

OTTAWA – A two-alarm fire has left a family without a place to stay.

Around 11:45 p.m., crews were called to 19 Westwinds Place after a 911 call from the resident reporting a fire in the basement.

A working fire was declared when crews arrived to find heavy smoke conditions inside the front door.

The fire was upgraded to a second alarm and crews had to take a defensive approach to battling the place.

Family members, including a dog, had already evacuated when crews arrived.

The Red Cross and the Salvation Army have responded to the scene, while OC Transpo was providing a shelter bus for the family and fire crews.

There were no injuries and there is no word yet on a cause or damage estimate.
