Debate over Rideau High School closure continues

The debate continues over whether to close Rideau High School, after a presentation to a packed house Wednesday night.

Close to 100 people showed up at the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board’s Committee of the Whole meeting to say that closing the school would be short sighted, in part, because the neighbourhood is growing.

Postmedia reports, Rawlson King, president of the Overbrook Community Association, told the committee that closing Rideau High would be an act of ‘systemic racism.’ The paper says many of the students at the school are refugees and immigrants, or of aboriginal background, and that 20 per cent of the students are just learning English.

The debate continues at 7 p.m. Thursday at the school board office.

Earlier this week, the committee recommended the closure of six west-end schools, as the board tries to cut expenses to fit within its funding.
