OTTAWA — Pre sale for RBC Bluesfest begins at 10 a.m.
A wide and varied musical buffet has been unveiled for this summer’s festival, including a band whom for organizers the waiting has been the hardest part.
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers will headline the final night of the 10-day festival at LeBreton Flats. Opening night acts include Toby Keith, Sam Roberts Band and Death From Above 1979.
Bluesfest will see its first appearances by Pink, Muse, 50 Cent and Gary Clark, Jr.
“We’re…encompassing country, rap, pop, rock, everything in between,” said Mark Monahan, executive director. “That’s really the biggest challenge, trying to round out the lineup and make sure that you’ve got something that’s going to appeal to the youth pass holders but also to the older demo that’s been with us since the start.”
Monahan is crossing one of the big names off his all-time wish list, with Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers.
“I think he’s been on our list for many years. It’s a big year for him,” he said, referring to Petty’s 40th anniversary tour.
With 2017 being Canada’s 150th anniversary and the sesquicentennial expected to attract more tourists than normal, Bluesfest is offering weekend passes for the first time. Thursday-Sunday passes will be sold for both the first and second weekends of the festival, to draw in out-of-town concert-goers.
Bluesfest runs July 6-16.
