CRA website taken offline after discovering ‘internet vulnerability’

If you were hoping to file your taxes online this weekend, you’re out of luck. The Canada Revenue Agency’s website has been taken offline.

The CRA posted a warning notice late Saturday afternoon on its website, stating that it’s detected what it calls an “internet vulnerability.”

CRA spokesperson David Walters says they are not aware of any unauthorized access to taxpayer information and that the services were taken offline Friday afternoon as a precaution, and not as a result of any hack or breach.

“Ensuring that Canadians’ personal information is not compromised is a priority for us and we are working to bring our online services back up as soon as possible,” said Walters.

“We are aware of an internet vulnerability that affects some computer servers used by websites worldwide. As a result, in an abundance of caution we have taken down our online services, including electronic filing, and are taking steps to ensure that all information and systems remain safe.”

The agency says users will still be able to work on their tax forms online but you won’t be able to file them.

There was no indication of when the service would be brought back online.
