Twelve eastern Ontario schools to close

KEMPTVILLE, Ont. — Eastern Ontario’s public school board has voted to close 12 schools, as it tries to shed empty pupil spaces and reduce expenses.
The Upper Canada District School Board voted at a special meeting in Kemptville, Thursday night, to close eight schools within the next 15 months. Four others will close at dates to be determined.
The board initially looked at closing 29 schools, but the list was pared back.
Closing in September 2017:
- Benson P.S.
- Plantagenet P.S.
- Rideau Centennial E.S.
- Rothwell-Osnabruck School (grades 7-12)
- S.J. McLeod P.S.
Closing in September 2018:
- Prince of Wales P.S.
- Wolford P.S.
- Oxford-on-Rideau P.S. (subject to making space available at South Branch E.S.)
Closing on dates to be determined:
- North Stormont P.S. at a date to be confirmed pending Ministry approval for an addition at Roxmore P.S.
- Maynard P.S. at a date to be confirmed pending Ministry approval for an addition or rebuild of Wellington E.S.
- St. Lawrence S.S./Cornwall Collegiate and V.S. at a date to be confirmed pending Ministry approval for the rebuild of one Cornwall grades 7-12 school.
- Toniata P.S. at a date to be confirmed pending Ministry approval for the rebuild of a new Brockville elementary school that consolidates Toniata P.S. and Commonwealth P.S. (with Prince of Wales P.S.)
