College strike enters week 2

OTTAWA — International students, worried about their visas because of the Ontario college strike, are being reassured they will not be penalized for delays beyond their control.
Visas for international students require them to be in school in order to stay in the country. But because of the strike, Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada is reassuring international students that they will not face enforcement action.
Students who need to stay longer than their visas because the completion of their classes is delayed can apply for extensions. A spokesperson for Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada says students applying for extensions should include a letter from their school’s registrar with their application.
No new talks scheduled
As picket lines outside Algonquin and Ontario’s 23 other public colleges continue for a second week, no new talks are scheduled between the union and the College Employer Council, which bargains on behalf of the colleges.
So far, the provincial government has not given any indication that it plans to step in and put an end to the strike.
