Rainfall warning continues for Ottawa area

OTTAWA – Heavy rain and high winds are expected in the capital today, prompting weather warnings across eastern Ontario.
Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for Ottawa and all of eastern Ontario. About 40 millimetres of rain was recorded at the Ottawa airport, Sunday, and 1310 NEWS meteorologist Jill Taylor expects another 10 millimetres to fall Monday.
Taylor forecasts the rain to end in the city around 1 p.m., but says there will also be strong winds.
“I’m concerned about the wind for some areas because a lot of the trees still have leaves,” which could make it easier for the wind to topple trees and branches, Taylor explained. “So there could be power outages for some today.”
Wind warnings were issued along the Seaway Valley and the eastern tip of the province, but not Ottawa.
Flooding closes roads
Localized flooding was so bad during the Monday morning commute that police closed Halifax Drive, near Walkley Road and St-Laurent Boulevard, to vehicles and pedestrians in both directions.
In Gatineau, police closed Maloney Boulevard near Labrosse because of localized flooding.
A traffic spotter told 1310 NEWS she drove through water up to her floodboards on Maitland Avenue, near Clyde Avenue.
There are also reports that Bathgate Road is flooded from Ogilvie Road to Plumber Avenue.
Ponding and hydroplaning is a concern on many other routes, as well.
