Hundreds took part in the 17th annual memorial service in downtown Ottawa, to remember those who have sacrificed their time and lives for firefighter services.
This year, six people are being remembered for falling during the line of duty, while 19 other members were given the Legacy of Courage.
“It's important for us to remember them. They have been apart of our family for many years and, quite frankly, it's a nice ceremony for us to celebrate their life, as well as remember their deaths,” said Kim Ayotte, Ottawa Fire Chief.
Minister of Children, Community and Social Services, Lisa McLeod was also in attendance, giving her thanks and gratitude to the families of the fallen.
“Your loved ones went to work each and every single day, knowing that they may never come home because of the work they have done for the city and the people,” she added.
This was also an opportunity to speak up against the need for added support when it comes to mental health in the workplace.
Ayotte said he would like the government to do more when it comes to resources.
“We would like the government to step up and provide more medical resources to help our members. We can't do everything from within.”
A national ceremony will be held this Sunday at LeBreton Flats to honour all firefighters from across the country.
