Five years since tragic Barrhaven bus crash

By Alex Black

It's been five years since the Barrhaven bus crash

Six people were killed, including the bus driver, when an OC Transpo double-decker bus collided with a Via Rail train.

The crash happened on the Transitway, at the rail crossing near Fallowfield Road and Woodroffe Avenue, just before 9 a.m. on September 18, 2013.

Thirty-five other people who were on the bus were injured in the crash, while no train passengers suffered  injuries.

A Transportation Safety Board investigation concluded that the driver's view of the road was obstructed by foliage as the bus approached the crossing just as the train was coming into its path.

The investigation also determined  that the driver was probably distracted by the video screens he was required to monitor on the bus, and the TSB recommended that guidelines be developed for the use of in-vehicle screens to reduce distraction.

The TSB also recommended that the City of Ottawa review the need for grade separation at level crossings.
